Redwoods

We got to the Humbolt Redwoods park at dusk, and there was a distinct and sudden change from normal trees lining the road to redwoods. We were suddenly in pitch darkness, and it's very eerie such huge trees so close to the road - like a forest from one of the darker fairy tales.

Apparently this is where they filmed the in-the-trees scenes in The Empire Strikes Back.

Lost Coast

The Lost Coast is suitably deserted (we saw about 5 other cars in 100 miles of road), with the scenery making it well worth the drive.

While we were wandering along the beach and having a quick paddle (we're English, we have to :-) ), a group of pelicans flew past.
